I originally started this review with glowing superlatives such as phenomenal, incredible, and fantastic―all of which are true, but to properly “review” my latest journey with Sam Kimball and Crush Wine, I felt it was important to share some of the details of the Hidden Heart of Tuscany.
We began our journey in Pienza, a fifteenth century town, considered the penultimate “Renaissance city,” overlooking the rolling hills of Val d'Orcia. The cobblestone streets are lined with shops, cafés and the aroma of Pecorino cheese from the salumerias drifts through the air.
From there we traveled in a Mercedes motorcoach to the winery of Castello Trecerchi, a castle built in 1414 where we enjoyed a sumptuous, locally sourced lunch accompanied by a selection of wines.
Over the next six days our itinerary included another superb lunch at a cheese farm; Montepulciano, where we walked the sloping streets to another family-owned winery; Sienna we learned about the traditions of the Palio horse race; and Lucca, another Renaissance city, world renowned for its city wall: 100 feet wide, 40 feet high. Now, a pedestrian park, it continues to surround the city.
The Chianti Classico wine region provided a traditional Tuscan lunch before our last two days, which were spent in Florence.
A local city guide navigated us through the historical streets with its celebrated buildings, followed by yet another incredible lunch.
No matter where we were, accommodations were top rated, the food unparalleled, and the wine beyond compare. The people we met were gracious and kind. Our daily guide, Aliche (sp) gave us insight to the history of the country, local customs, and their superstitions―with detail and humor.
Someone asked me what was the highlight of the trip. My response was “all of it,” and I look forward to another adventure
P.S. if you are single, do not hesitate. A certain camaraderie forms among the group and Sam is an excellent host.
Truly an extraordinary, inspirational and a jolly good time.
